Coursename: Stucture and Bonding in Crystalline Materials
Semester: Fall: 12 units
This first year graduate course is divided into two closely related sections. The first reviews the skills and ideas necessary to understand the atomic structure of crystalline materials. The objective is for the student to be able to describe crystal structures based on their symetry and packing configurations and to understand how difraction is used to experimentally probe crystal structures. In the second section models for cohesive force in crystals are reviewed; both quantitative and phenomenological descriptions of secondary, ionic, metallic, and covalent bonds are included. Throughout the class the links between structure and cohesion are emphasized. 4 hrs. lec.
