Current Research Topics

Studies of the Initial Solidification Behavior of Steels.
In this work phenomena that occur during the first 10 milliseconds of solidification are studied by measuring heat transfer rates of droplets contacting water cooled copper molds.

Studies of the Solidification Behavior of Liquid Oxides
Liquid oxides can be deeply undercooled before crystallization. In this work the double hot thermocouple technique is used to help elucidate heterogeneous nucleation phenomena.

Studies of the Effect of Inclusion Chemistry on Solidification Behavior
In this work the criteria for effective nucleants for low carbon steels will be determined.

Clean Steel Production
The fundamental issues involved in inclusion removal from liquid steels are studied with particular emphasis on separation at the slag-metal interface.

The Effect of Liquid Oxide Films on Heat Transfer Rates During Casting
In this work the effect of thin liquid oxide films is studied with a view to understanding the complex behavior that occurs in a continuous casting mold

Initial Solidification Phenomena in a Continuous Casting Mold
The detailed nature of solidification within a continuous casting mold is being studied with particular attention to the formation of oscillation marks.
